Nanomechanical topological insulators with an auxiliary orbital degree of freedom

Discrete degrees of freedom, such as spin and orbital, provide a tool to manipulate electrons, photons phonons. Topological insulators have stimulated intense interests in condensed-matter physics, optics, acoustics mechanics, usually with focus on the degree freedom. However, orbital freedom constitutes another fundamental attribute crystals, but has seldom been investigated topological insulators. Here, we demonstrate an auxiliary nanomechanical platform. We realize adiabatic transition between distinct edge states, which crucial functionality for integrated circuits accommodating channels. Beyond one-dimensional further construct zero-dimensional Dirac-vortex states using These exhibit strong second-order third-order nonlinearities. Our results introduce alternative means phase possess protected from disorder can be realized real materials well synthetic based optical, acoustic or mechanical characteristics. In addition spin, now provides extra handle manipulating phases.
